The canton of Aargau, located in the North of Switzerland, on the Swiss Plateau, has more than 630 000 inhabitants, of which a quarter are foreign nationals; this mosaic of population characterizes more its cultural diversity. In large cities such as Aarau, Baden, Brugg, Lenzburg or Zofingen, early summer youth festivals are the highlight of the cultural calendar. In winter, Carnival is also of great importance in some areas. In many villages and rural areas, fertility rites are also celebrated in the spring, as well as thanksgiving days for autumn crops. In addition, there are various Christian celebrations in Aargau.
